6.08 THE GREAT BIG HORRIBLE QUIZ (ROUND 1 ANSWERS)

So how are we doing so far? Well I'm not going to reveal who's earned what but I am going to reveal the answers to the last round anyway just so you can go "HA!"

SURNAMES:

#1: COLE: Locke Cole! (I remember this one thanks to having to learn what a baton-de-colle was in French lessons so I always think of Locke as a stick of glue)

#2: GERALDINE: Edward 'Edge' Geraldine! (Due to there being name changes between the Japanese and English versions there are technically two Edwards in your main party in FFIV so both answers of 'Edge' or 'Edward' were acceptable.)

#3: CORAL: Amarant Coral! Yes, this was a nasty one wasn't it? Which is exactly why I chose it! Looking at my old FFIX strategy guide during my youth I had a hard time trying not to get Eiko Carol and Amarant Coral mixed up. And now all those years later I've abused it for a trivia game...

MIDDLE NAMES:

#1: JOANNA: Rosa Joanna Farrell! (My first introduction to Rosa was through a featured article on the FF wiki and my initial assumption was "Whoa, that's a fancy name!". My second thought was why she was wearing her underwear as overwear but given who I'm known to fangirl this wasn't too foreign an idea...)

#2: CHARLOTTE: Lenna Charlotte Tycoon! Given how Lenna got a rather nasty spell from the romanization fairy and spent a while going by 'Reina' on the anthology version of V, it's a good thing her middle name シャルロット can make an easy transition into Charlotte. (Though oddly the name 'Charles' in Japanese is often written as 'シャルル' (Sha-ru-ru) so whenever I discover a character going by that name in a Japanese manga/anime/CD drama I think the character is called "Sha-Loo-Loo"...not the butchest of boy's names I'm sure...)

#3: CARUDAS: Vayne Carudas Solidor! Yes, one of the privileges of being born into Archadian nobility seems to be getting a pretentious middle name. I wish I knew what it actually meant but I only remember a few words from my latin classes... (Stultus Canis Latrat!)

REAL NAMES:

#1: SARAH: ...is the real name of 'Dagger' AKA Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII. Whilst the poor girl doesn't remember it herself, you can discover it through a sidequest. (It's also an allusion to the original Princess Sarah from FFI and coincidentally both games begin with the kidnap of a Princess whose real name is Sarah!)

#2: FFAMRAN: ...is the real name of Balthier! Whilst he changed his name to disown his father and establish his own identity, it's also possible he wanted something easier to pronounce that just rolled off the top of his silver tongue. (Also his middle name of ミド (Mied) is an allusion to Mid from FFV who you might remember had a grandfather named Cid that was a reputable genius and scholar... hmm...doesn't Balthier have a relation called Cid that's a reputable genius?)

#3: SARISA: ...is the real name of Faris! Her name 'Faris' is actually derived from her childlike pronunciation of her real name. (Which doesn't make nearly as much sense in the anthology version where they call her 'Salsa'. Mostly because it gets me thinking of dances or sauces... mmm...I could go for some salsa now actually...)

BASTARD QUESTION ABOUT WHICH FF CHARACTER HAS A REAL NAME IN JAPANESE THAT'S ALSO A PASTRY!?

The answer was...Lightning! Yes, it's understandable why Lightning changed her name from Éclair when you remember that it's also the name of a very delicious cream filled pastry. (Éclair does also mean 'lightning' in French but most English speakers understandably relate the word to something delicious you see in the bakery window yet know you shouldn't go for but it's just so damn tempting, oh look at that icing shimmer...the glaze of the choux pastry....MMMMM...it's probably moist and tender to the tongue... OH AND THAT SWEET CREAM TEXTURE...FIVE PLEASE!)

I should note that I was unaware that there was a dessert known as a Montblanc when I submitted the question (though technically I wouldn't call it a pastry due to it not possessing the aforementioned key ingredient) so I will accept the Montblanc answers due to negligence on my part.
