6.05: Final Fantasy Family Feud [Sign-ups]

I don't want to swamp everyone with activities, but this game will take a while to set up and run so I'd like to get started on it as soon as possible. It's Final Fantasy Family Feud! (Which I'll abbreviate to FFFF.)

If you've not seen the game show, you can watch some episodes here to get an idea of how it works. Basically, there are two teams who play against each other for three rounds. In each round, you're given a category, and your goal is to guess the items belonging to that category that people frequently named in a survey. But obviously, this is with a Final Fantasy twist. :)

The first step is to find out who's participating and then form teams. Then the next step is to schedule games! Ideally, I'd like everyone to be able to play two FFFF games before the end of Game (Cycle?) 6.

Games
I've taken a survey of ~180 people (mostly people who frequent Reddit, although there's a few Tumblr folks in the mix as well), asking them to name items in various Final Fantasy-related categories. I'm in the process of making "scoreboards" for each category -- basically a list of answers given with points assigned, equal to the percentage of people (rounded down) who gave the answer. Note: answers with < 2% of the vote (and sometimes < 3% of the vote) are discarded, so the points in the scoreboard do not add up to 100.

These scoreboards will be used for the Family Feud games, which will be run in the comments of a Dreamwidth entry (entries will be posted here in

ff_minigames). The times for the games will be scheduled in advance based on the availability of the members of the two teams that are facing off.

Thirty minutes prior to the scheduled game time, I'll post the game post and begin setting up threads and asking people to check in. The first round of the game will start right at the scheduled time, unless people request a delay due to missing team members or any other issue.

There'll be a questions thread and a general non-participant chatter thread. I'll also use the FF Land Chatzy so that teams can talk to each other easily or talk to me. There'll be three rounds, and each round will have up to four threads:

1. The jumpball thread - I present the category to two people (for the first round, the person in the #1 position on the team; for the second round, the person in the #2 position on the team; etc., wrapping around if necessary). Immediately, those two people can comment with one answer that they think many people responded with. Whoever gets the higher answer wins possession (or whoever replied with the #1 answer first, if they both got the #1 answer). The team in possession can then choose whether they want to play (become the guessing team) or pass (let the other team become the guessing team).

2. The guessing thread - The members of the guessing team (starting with the person directly after the member who did the jumpball, wrapping around as necessary) take turns trying to guess all the items on the board, one by one. This thread will have different subthreads where I prompt each member in turn to tell me their guess. I will respond by revealing their guess on the board or giving them a strike (X). If they guess all the items, they win the total points on the board. If they get 3 strikes, the other team has the chance to steal.

3. The stealing thread - If the guessing team got 3 strikes, this thread will be added. The other team has one chance to correctly guess one of the missing items on the board in order to steal all the currently-revealed points on that board. If their guess is not on the board, though, the points go to the original guessing team. Unlike the guessing team, the stealing team can discuss their answer in a group (either in chat or in the thread itself). But whatever answer gets put forward by the team leader counts as the team's guess.

4. The results thread - I reveal any unguessed items on the board and award FFFF points to whichever team won the board. Note that points within the FFFF game don't translate to normal points used for the

finalfantasyland game. They are just used to see who wins the Family Feud game.

From our test run of the game, I estimate that games last about two hours, so be sure you have a block of time and the internet connection needed in order to participate. :)

Teams

Normally, this game has teams of five, and ideally, I'd like one FFFF team per

finalfantasyland team. However, I don't think that will work well here given the number of members and the logistics needed to get a game going. So, team sizes can be anywhere from 1 to 5 people, and if you like, you can have a mix of classes on one FFFF team. We're setting up the game so that uneven/heterogeneous teams should not be a problem (see below for how points are being handled). Do note, though, that if you're on a team of 1, you'll have fewer minds to consult when trying to steal and you'll be doing all the jumpballs.

Each team once it's formed will need to come up with a (team or family) name and will need to appoint a team leader and order for the team. The team leader takes the #1 spot and is responsible for final decisions on stealing answers. If you're in positions #1-3, you will participate in at least one jumpball, so basically the higher positions have slightly more pressure.

Points

I'm proposing this point system:
- 10 points per member for each game you participate in
- 30 points SPLIT for each round you win (for example, if you have a team of 3 Monks and 1 Thief, then 22 points would be awarded to Team Monk, and 7 to Team Thief; if you have a team of 2 Dragoons, all 30 points go to Team Dragoon). (18-90 points possible per game if you win all three rounds)
- 60 points SPLIT for winning a game (12-60 points possible per won game depending on team makeup)

Under this system, I think we're able to reward classes with high participation while still allowing small teams to have a fair shot at points.
