5.12 Eye See You Results!

I'll admit before I arranged this I was under the impression that 60% of FF eyes were identical save for the color scheme. THE WISDOM YOU GAIN THROUGH ARRANGING TRIVIA MINIGAMES...




1. Was Yuna! She's pretty distinctive thanks to her complete heterochromia (personally I'm a big fan of that in character designs) so everyone managed to identify her no problem!

2. Was Cloud! A big deal is made about Cloud's shiny blue mako eyes in the original FFVII and ACC loves to communicate a lot of Cloud's feelings and experience through them. (Also he has very pretty eyelashes. Just saying.)

3. Was Zidane! Because of the FFIX character designs Zidane has larger eyes than most other FF protagonists which is usually an easy way to spot him out. Though determining his eye color can be tricky - his eyes have more of a turquoise shade than other blue eyed protagonists such as Cloud and Squall.

4. Was Rinoa! During the PSOne era all the main love interests had the combination of dark hair and brown eyes so it can be tricky to differentiate them based on graphics alone. Rinoa has more realistic eyes than Dagger and slightly chunkier eyebrows.

5. Was Terra! This was a tricky one as it was from the anthology CG of FFVI where the Amano designs were used rather than the Nomura interpretations hence Terra and Celes appearing to have identical faces and hair colors. The tip off is the eye color - Celes has periwinkle blue eyes and Terra has bright green eyes. (Though Terra's canon eye color is up for debate as she's had official designs with green, blue AND purple eyes. Thanks for the consistency, SE...)

6. Was Lightning! Pretty easy given the pink hair and expression. Curiously she does seem to have similar eyes to Cloud in terms of shape (though Lightning's eyes have a greener tint than Cloud's) but because Lightning tends to keep them half open most of the time the similarity isn't immediate.

7. Was Ashe! Ashe's mousy hair and grey eyes are a refreshingly realistic color choice in comparison to some of the brighter tones and vivid combinations apparent in other games.

8. Was Sephiroth! How he does not have impaired vision with tiny cat pupils I do not know but combined with that mako green eye color he's fairly easy to pick out.

9. Was Exdeath! Golbez and Exdeath have similar helmets when it comes to the visor (the big difference is Exdeath has pronged ear things and a handle thing at the top whilst Golbez has horns) so usually the tip off is the amount of gild plating - Exdeath has a lot of root-like gild plating whilst Golbez has a limited amount. (That and I couldn't cut the shoulders out of the image so you could see Exdeath's giant shoulder horns.)

10. Was Firion! Whilst Firion has been through several different looks over the years, SE seems to have determined his original Amano design to be the canon look with him having these large brown Amano eyes in the Dawn of Souls portraits (his sprite has blue eyes for some reason...) and Dissidia. (I will not lie, I personally adore those eyes.)

11. Was Kefka! Again from the anthology CG, Kefka is easiest to identify by his illustrious eye make up rather than his actual eye color. (Dissidia went on to make it green rather than blue and it's rather hard to determine if Amano ever gave Kefka an eye color.)

12. Was Kuja! Kuja is another villain easier to determine by his eye make up than his eye color as he has a thing for red/carmine eyeshadow. (Curiously so does The Emperor in Dissidia...now there's a bitchfight waiting to happen...) Unfortunately he too has an eye color inconsistency between games with blue eyes in FFIX and lilac eyes in Dissidia. Dammit Nomura, they're supposed to be blue because it's a Genome trait, do your research.... *grumble*

13. Was BASCH FON RONSENBURG! The tell-tale clue here is the hazel eyes and the scar right above his brow. Amusingly no one mistook him for his twin brother or Vaan.

14. Was Zell! Whilst the green eyed/golden blond hair look isn't all that common in FF (I think Rikku, anthology!Terra and possibly Onion Knight are the only other main characters who have it?) the giveaway here is part of his distinct facial tattoo.

15. Was Hope! Hope's eye and hair color are more muted than most other FF characters, possibly to reflect his more passive status in comparison to the other party members?

16. Was Rydia! Why is it we don't have green haired blue eyed female mages anymore?

17. Was The Emperor! Like Firion he has distinct Amano eyes in most of his appearances though Emperor's are notably smaller and narrower. GEE, I WONDER IF HE'S EVIL. Also he loves his eye make-up. Pimps those eyes something rotten. Mmhmm.

18. Was Luneth! Whilst there are plenty of white/silver haired pretty boys in this series, Luneth is pretty easy to identify thanks to having large purple eyes.

19. Was Onion Knight! He probably has the biggest eyes in Dissidia after Shantotto due to his youth though that makes them very easy to notice and pick out.

20. Was Warrior of Light! Warrior of Light's face is very much an Amano design (even though the design for Dissidia was finessed by Nomura) as its based on 1987 illustrations for the original Final Fantasy. Furthermore blue eyes and silver hair color are both consistent with the depiction of the Warrior of Light for the Final Fantasy anthology CG. Admittedly this was a nasty one given that WoL's helmet is in the way which can be rather misleading.

21. Was Auron! Because we don't have enough naturally grey haired brown eyed people in FF games so it's fairly easy to determine it's Auron, especially with those scars and those shades...

22. Was Prishe! Prishe has fairly simple large blue eyes but the key to catching her out was actually the length of her ears. (So why I put that in an eye contest I don't know...)

23. Was Gilgamesh! Gilgamesh has had many incarnations over the years but I went by his original Amano design from FFV since it's very distinct and the other designs didn't really have eyes...

24. Was Ultimecia! I chose this one for the evilz because Seymour and Ultimecia both have a lot of blue streaks on their faces though in Ultimecia's case its make up and in Seymour's it's root...vein...things. The tip off here is that Ultimecia has gold eyes, Seymour has blue eyes. (But he has equally FABULOUS eyelashes...)

25. Was Vayne! Because I like villains and I like Vayne so I thought why not? He's an interesting case in that he has notable lines under his eyes (evidently all that scheming has been taking a toll on him!) which led a few people to confuse him for Vossler. The main differences between the two are that the shape of Vayne's eyes is neater and Vossler has larger bags under his eyes.

HTML mishaps aside, I must say your commentary is quite amusing to read, haha!

though about Kuja's eyes, when has he ever followed any of the typical genome traits xD;;

Oh I could go onto a very long ramble about Kuja and his subtle Genome traits but his eyes are the one Genome trait he does not go to any effort to disguise. You'll notice that all Genomes have blue eyes (according to Ultimania Genomes are created from elements of Terra in the same fashion Black Mages are made from Gaia's mist so given how Terra is blue all over it may explain the prominent blue eyes) whilst in Gaia very few people have them - Zidane and Kuja are the only important characters with blue eyes. As such I was rather annoyed when Dissidia changed the eye color as I felt it was a subtle but important little detail.

I was talking more along the lines of him not having blond hair, haha, but oh? I haven't read the Ultimania (well, except your excerpts of course), so I didn't know that bit... Interesting! Though I had noticed Zidane and Kuja being the only two (besides the other genomes ofc) that had blue eyes in game, I guess it just never really occurred to me that they are indeed more llilac-y in Dissidia... Good point! and now I will forever be bothered by it too, thanks LOL ;;
