6.08 THE GREAT BIG HORRIBLE QUIZ (ROUND 2 ANSWERS)

Another set of answers, another chance to go 'HA!'

GRAVESITES:

#1: THAMASA: Is where poor General Leo is buried. Despite working for the Empire, he had his morals and the respect of many a member of the Returners who made sure to give him a dignified and respectful burial. (There are actually quite a few deaths in Thamasa but Leo is easily the most famous.)

#2: WINHILL: Is where poor Raine is buried. Though her death occurs before the game start, due to the way the story is told you get to meet her whilst she's still alive through flashbacks and so when you visit Winhill in the present you learn that Raine passed away some time ago. Whilst the details are not explained, enough hints are dropped to suggest that she died giving birth to her and Laguna's child. A child that was then sent with Ellone to Edea's orphanage. Huh, wonder what happened to that kid given that the child that we all know ended up attached to Ellone and referring to her as 'sis' was Squall... Say, where did Squall come from anyway...?

#3: CITY OF THE ANCIENTS: Is where poor Aeris is buried. Yes, we all know how it goes. The penetration from above, the materia gently descending down the stairs in clean arcs, the party members bidding her goodbye and descending her into the water... I remember being 9 and my friend spoiling Aeris's death for me by announcing it only to quickly make it up by showing it. That scene, man... it's what convinced me to one day give this series a go and inspired me more than I can possibly say. Whoops---sorry... went all nostalgic there.

BIRHPLACES:

#1: BEVELLE: Was the birthplace of Yuna! Before Braska's calm, Yuna was born and raised in the Spiran capital until the age of 7 when she then moved to Besaid. This may explain why she lacks the typical 'ya' speech mannerism that most Besaid locals have. (At least until you remember that Lulu lacks it too and she's a native so...urr...blitzball, anyone?)

#2: BRAN BAL: Was the birthplace of Zidane! (Though you could also answer Kuja or Mikoto) Yes, Zidane was raised by Baku leader of Tantalus since the age of 4 but before then he lived in Bran Bal quite happily until some insecure Genome who didn't want to be replaced decided to ditch him on the world of Gaia. (Never let an older brother babysit their kid brother in a Final Fantasy - it seldom ends well!) As a result Zidane doesn't remember much about his birthplace other than there being a magnificent blue light. He spent a lot of his early adolescence searching for it all over Gaia but as it was in Terra...yeah...didn't work out so well. Good thing in the long run though...

#3: LIX: Was the birthplace of Bartz! You can travel there before hopping worlds through meteors and even visit Bartz's old home to indulge in a flashback. The famous track 'Home Sweet Home' quite appropriately plays there.

ADOPTED NATIONS:

#1: BARON: ...is the adopted nation of Cecil! Due to being a posthumous baby and his mother passing away giving birth to him, Cecil had no one to care for him but his elder brother Theodor... unfortunately that didn't work out quite so well and Cecil was found on the outskirts of Baron and ended up being adopted by the King of Baron. (I guess this means my crack view of Dissidia!Cecil as a Disney princess isn't entirely without reason then?)

#2: FYNN: ...is the adopted nation of Firion! Firion was originally born in Salamand but became orphaned at an early age so he was adopted by Maria and Leon's parents who lived in Fynn so as a result that became his home. However another possible answer was Guy who was also adopted by the same family (through Firion no less!) and originally found wandering around in the wild due to being abandoned by his biological parents.

#3: ALEXANDRIA: ...is the adopted home of Princess Garnet/Dagger! She ended up in Alexandria purely by accident thanks to escaping Madain Sari on a boat which eventually drifted into the Alexandrian Harbor. Because of her resemblance to the recently deceased Princess Garnet, she was adopted as a replacement (after a nasty little summoner horn removal) and came to forget her past until she returned to her birthplace. Even so Dagger is terribly loyal to Alexandria and its people, even if she doesn't consider herself worthy to govern them due to her heritage.

BASTARD QUESTION ABOUT WHICH FF CHARACTER WAS RETCONNED FROM UR TO KAZUS

The answer was...Refia! In the original NES version of III, all four Onion Knights are raised in the village of Ur but the DS remake tweaked that so only Luneth and Arc grew up there. Refia was instead raised in the nearby town of Kazus and Ingus was raised in Castle Sasune. (Though Refia could've been a boy in the original NES version which MIGHT make her the first FF character to have a sex change. Though I'm sure that won't close the possibility of her being the Onion Knight we see in Dissidia anytime soon...)
